For our records, it's good to note what is going on in the garden.

Weather:

• We had a late frost scare about a week ago which is unusual.
• There seemed to be a lack of "spring" weather. We seemed to go from winter to summer for the most part so we only have one tiny crop of peas planted. And, that tiny crop had to be covered once because it SNOWED. No broccoli. :(
• We also have had about a week of heavy rain. Rain, Rain, Rain. This has cause a rust problem with the tomatoes. We wish we had waited to plant the tomatoes. We didn't get the straw down around them when we planted, another misstep.

Disease/Pest:

• With all the rain, we are worried about powdery mildew getting some of the crops, but so far so good.
• We have asparagus beetles for the first time. Ben hand picked them. They also are the cause of the deformed stalks on some of the plants where they just bend over.
• We covered the tomatoes because of a very late frost warning and then rain city hit. The weight of the the frost cover I think pushed some leaves into the dirt, and now we have rust all over some of the tomatoes. Also, the heavy rain splashed dirt all over the tomatoes. We had meant to mulch with straw but we didn't get it down in time.
• Moles. There are moles or some burrowing critter all over in the flower gardens and the yard. They have killed some plants by burrowing under the root zone. Usually we ignore them, but this year they are really being a problem.
• Grubs are abundant in some parts of the garden. I found several under a dying blueberry plant. We are going to use a neem oil spray on the ground to help with this. We were going to use nematodes, but we researched and found they would not survive well in the acidity of the blueberry soil.

Misc:

• I had to replant corn. The seed I used may have been too old. For the second (and for the first) planting, I planted two kernels per hole and about one or none came up. Good to know for next year. Double seed!
• Not all the potatoes came up. Either something is eating them or it was the iffy seed potatoes. Some were big but had only one or two eyes. Maybe we needed to sit them in the sun longer? Either way, there are big voids in the potato row.
• DO NOT BUY Holy Cow Manure next year! Weeds, weeds, weeds. So full of weed seeds. It looks like little grass weeds ALL OVER. Wait a pain in the neck it has been.
• We lost many tomatoes and pepper starts to stunted growth because we did not realize the timer power strip only "timered" half the strip. This caused the lights to stay on 24-7 for some of the shelves, stunting the plants.

Crop Updates:

• Lettuce, cabbage, and peas are growing ok. Peppers are alright. The potatoes that came up look good.  
• Still not really any lettuce that can be picked. It's all small. I have been planting in succession. Next year I think we should start some lettuce indoors. We did get a late start because of the real weird weather.
• Blueberries. Not sure they are making berries. The frost may have destroyed the flowers. :(
• Just replanted some of the cucumbers. I think we need new Marketmore seeds. Also the weather did get cool after I planted them. Should do ok now.

Ideas for next year:

• Start squash and melons early in pots that will decompose so we get an early start. These crops do not like their roots disturbed during transplant.
• Start some lettuce indoors.
• The onions need to be started in plastic pots. Pulling them out of those coir ones messes with the roots and slows them down.
• Order new Marketmore cucumber seeds.

Well, that's the status. We aren't expert gardeners, but we sure have learned a lot.
