We've started turning the soil in the Butterfly Garden (check out the butterfly garden tab at the top of the site here to see pictures of the layout) and removing most of the plants the previous owners had. I did save a few including this pretty purple one. I've discovered that it is a hyacinth. I love purple and almost all the things being planted in the butterfly garden will be purple. This was definitely a good keeper!
More progress has been made on this veggie garden (there is a tiered one on the other side of the house). We have two more boxes to add. One in the back corner there and one long one across the front that will be two tiered with flowers all across the lower front tier. As you can see from the stakes, Ben has already started figure out where the fence posts will go.
Above you can see that more progress was made on the herb garden. Bandit went to leap all fours into the beautiful black dirt but Ben pulled him back. Apparently he loves dirt as much as we do!
Yesterday we spent several hours out in the rain working on the top tier of the herb garden. You can see that Ben dug over two feet down as he was trying to remove all the clay that the water just sits on top of. After that, we filled it with black dirt/compost mix and finally planted our very first time OUTDOORS. Woo hoo!!!!!!
What did we plant? We planted 15 Jersey ?Giant? asparagus. Today we picked up purple asparagus crowns that we'll probably add in tomorrow.
All and all, we've been making progress. I couldn't stand working outside today because it could snow any minute and the wind is blowing nonstop. Just too cold!
Hooray for planting outside! Too bad the weather has turned for the worse is back to freezing cold and windy. Spring should be here by mid-June.
ReplyDeleteI know, there was snow on the ground today and I was really shocked to see it, not to mention bummed out! It seems like summer is never going to come! Kinda halts work on building gardens when it's so cold out. On the plus side, we got a quote on cutting down the dead trees in the back yard today.

ReplyDeleteI dunno. We need to clear out a lot of brush on the right corner of the back yard. We actually own a chunk of "high ground" on the other side of all that brush and the dead trees. It just doesn't seem like our yard because the way they let all the brush and trees divide it. We have a total of 0.596 acres of property. =) So it could end up being cool. Ben wants to eventually plant fruit trees up there.
